Mpox vaccination postponed indefinitely due to rising infection cases

Nigeria has postponed indefinitely the planned Mpox vaccination rollout, in view of the steady increase in confirmed and probable cases throughout the nation.

Following the emergency use authorization earlier issued by the United States F D A for the BioSciences vaccine titled Jynneos, the vaccination against the monkeypox virus which the Africa Centre for Disease Control cautions is still not within control, had been scheduled for the 8th of October 2024, using the two million ready Jynneos vaccines received from the USA in August.

Nevertheless, a representative from the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) acknowledged and confirmed the postponement to BusinessDay, but declined to comment on the details.

โ€œBut it is there, the vaccination has been pushed too many times to every unplanned date but such some plans are really deep. Once we are told of a date we can inform you about itโ€, the official said.

Mpox is an infectious disease similar to smallpox which is contracted from animal to human. Vaccination is the method and way to avoid this disease.

Back in Nigeria, reported cases of Mpox infection has been on the increase in the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention data as well as published literature. For the total number of 2024, confirmed case count is 84 and approximately 1,237 cases of borderline cases have been so far reported.
